Make sure that you are eligible to study in the US. The first step is to have the academic qualifications that are required by institutes in the US. For Masters Programs, you must have completed a 4 year graduation program, or equivalent, while for post graduate programs an existing Master’s degree is a must. For those of you who only completed a three year graduation program, apply for a Masters program in your country, and complete its first year. This one year of post graduate program will ensure that you are eligible.

Collect all relevant documents as they will need to be forwarded to the university you are applying for. For graduate programs, you will be required to provide your academic transcripts. Apply for standardized tests that are relevant to the course you are applying for. TOEFL is accepted all across the US as proof that you have professional proficiency over the language. A number of aspirants also seek teaching assistant responsibilities once they start their studies. In such cases, taking a TSE test will improve you chances. Depending on the course you are applying for, you may need to take other tests as well, the details of which will be made available to you by the university itself. Get your student visa approved once your application has been accepted by the university. Most commonly you will need to get a F-1 student visa, but in case you are visiting the US simply for practical training then a J-1 exchange visa is needed. You must make sure that your passport is ready before you apply for the visa. You will also need to present the visa authorities with a form I-20 issued by the institute which has accepted your application.

Note: The visa application should be obtained within 90 days of the date when you are expected by the university to arrive. You cannot apply more than 90 days in advance. In case of delays or extenuating circumstances, where you cannot arrive before the specified date, contact the university to have your I-20 form amended with a new date.
