Get your student visa approved once your application has been accepted by the university. Most commonly you will need to get a F-1 student visa, but in case you are visiting the US simply for practical training then a J-1 exchange visa is needed. You must make sure that your passport is ready before you apply for the visa. You will also need to present the visa authorities with a form I-20 issued by the institute which has accepted your application.
Note: The visa application should be obtained within 90 days of the date when you are expected by the university to arrive. You cannot apply more than 90 days in advance. In case of delays or extenuating circumstances, where you cannot arrive before the specified date, contact the university to have your I-20 form amended with a new date.
